In short
- The service's button opens Happ and passes the subscription to it: there is nothing to copy.
- Pasting from the clipboard and QR codes work through “+” in the top right corner of the main screen.
- Happ accepts
vless://,vmess://,trojan://,ss://,socks://,hysteria2://links, subscription links and encryptedhapp://cryptosubscriptions. - Happ will not add a WireGuard configuration.
- Refreshing a subscription downloads a fresh server list and pays for nothing.
Three ways to add a subscription
1. The service's “Add to Happ” button
Services put a button in the account, on the subscription page or in their bot that opens Happ through a special link. Happ starts and adds the subscription itself. It works on the device where you press the button: a phone, computer or tablet.
If the button opened a browser instead of Happ, the app is not installed on that device, or the wrong app is. Install Happ and press the button again.
2. Pasting from the clipboard
- Copy the subscription link or key in full — from the first character to the last.
- Open Happ and tap “+” in the top right corner of the main screen.
- Choose to paste from the clipboard.
On iPhone and iPad, the system asks for permission when an app reads the clipboard. Allow pasting — otherwise Happ will not get the link.
3. QR code
- Open the service's subscription QR code — on a computer screen or another phone.
- In Happ, tap “+” and choose to scan a QR code.
- Point the camera at the code.
A QR code is handy when the subscription is open on one device and you need to add it to another.
Manual entry
The same “+” menu has “Manual Input”: you pick a protocol and fill in the server parameters field by field. This is for people who run their own servers. Services issue a subscription, and there is no need to enter parameters one by one.
How to refresh a subscription
Refreshing downloads a fresh server list from the service's server. Tap ↻ next to the subscription name on the main screen.
What refreshing does:
- servers the service added or replaced appear in the list;
- servers the service removed disappear;
- the term and remaining traffic update if the service sends them.
Happ also refreshes the subscription on its own, at an interval the service sets. Refreshing does not extend or pay for access: you renew the term with the service.
How to tell the subscription was added
- A subscription header with its name appears on the main screen, with a server list under it.
- Tap the speedometer icon in the subscription header: Happ checks the latency to each server. Next to each server you will see a time in milliseconds or an icon: a green check — available, a red exclamation mark — unavailable.
- Pick a server and connect. On iPhone, on the first connection iOS asks you to allow adding a VPN configuration — allow it.
If it didn't work
Happ doesn't see anything in the clipboard
The “Clipboard is empty” error means Happ received nothing to paste.
- Copy the link again: on the same device and in full.
- On iPhone, allow pasting when the system asks.
- If the link is in a messenger, copy it through the message menu, not by selecting part of the text.
“Invalid link” or “invalid format”
The Happ documentation names these errors: “The subscription URL is not valid”, “Configuration … is not valid”, “Unknown content type”. Causes:
- the link was copied partly or with extra characters — a space, a quotation mark, part of the surrounding text;
- you copied a link to a page with instructions rather than the subscription itself;
- it is a WireGuard configuration: a
.conffile or text with[Interface]and[Peer]. Happ does not support WireGuard — you need a service on VLESS, VMess, Trojan, Shadowsocks or Hysteria2.
Timeout while adding a subscription
When adding or refreshing, Happ requests the subscription from the service's server. If there is no reply within 9 seconds, a Timeout error appears. The subscription server is unreachable from your network or temporarily not responding. Try a different network — Wi-Fi instead of mobile data or the other way round — then try again. If the error stays, write to the service's support.
The subscription was added, but there are no servers
- Refresh the subscription: on the first add the list sometimes fails to load.
- Read the lines in the server list. When the term has ended or the device limit is exceeded, services send lines with an explanation instead of servers.
- If there are no such lines and the list is empty after refreshing, write to the service's support.
Other reasons Happ won't connect are covered in Happ is not connecting.
The subscription was added twice
Adding it again creates a second copy of the subscription with the same servers. Keep one and delete the other. Two identical subscriptions cause confusion when picking a server.
Differences by platform
| Platform | What differs |
|---|---|
| iPhone, iPad | Requires iOS 15 or later. The system asks for permission to paste from the clipboard and to add a VPN configuration. Happ is not in the Russian App Store right now — how to find the real Happ |
| Android | Requires Android 5.0 or later. Happ is installed from Google Play (developer HappDev) or as an APK from the developer's GitHub |
| Windows, macOS, Linux | Requires Windows 10 (build 1809 or later) or 11, macOS 13 or later. For older systems the developer keeps version 1.0.2 |
| Android TV | On first launch Happ shows a QR code. Scan it in Happ on a phone on the same Wi-Fi network — the phone passes the subscription to the TV. If the local network transfer fails, choose Web Import and enter the on-screen code at tv.happ.su |
| Apple TV | A separate app, “Happ — Proxy Utility for TV”. The subscription is transferred the same way: the TV's QR code in Happ on a phone, or Web Import. When memory runs low, tvOS deletes the app's data — you will then need to add the subscription again |
On a TV, do not close the import screen until the transfer finishes: otherwise the subscription will be added only partly.
How it works in MaskNet
The MaskNet key is built into the subscription; there is nothing to paste.
- Open your MaskNet account on the device where Happ is installed.
- Press “Add subscription” — Happ opens with the subscription already added. The button works the same on a computer and on a phone.
- Pick a country and connect.
The QR code next to the button is for another device: a second phone, a tablet or a laptop. To a TV, the subscription is sent from a phone: open Happ on the TV — it shows a QR code. Scan it in Happ on the phone where the MaskNet subscription is already added. A MaskNet subscription is encrypted: it cannot be opened, copied or forwarded.
Frequently asked questions
