In short
- An empty server list — the subscription did not refresh, the term ended or the device limit is exceeded.
- Timeout on subscription refresh — Happ got no reply from the subscription server for 9 seconds.
- “Timeout” when checking the connection — the server did not respond through the tunnel.
- If one country fails and another works, the provider has blocked the IP of that specific server.
- Old versions of Happ do not connect to servers on current Xray: update the app.
No servers in Happ
- Refresh the subscription. Tap ↻ next to the subscription name. If the subscription was just added, the list does not always load the first time.
- Read the lines shown instead of servers. When the term has ended, traffic has run out or the device limit is exceeded, services send lines with an explanation instead of servers. Follow the text: renew the subscription or remove an old device in the service's account.
- Check the term with the service. The end date of your access is in the service's account.
- Update Happ. If the version is outdated, the service sends a message instead of servers saying the app is not supported. Install the latest version from an official source.
If the subscription is not on the main screen at all, add it again: How to add a subscription to Happ. On Apple TV, tvOS deletes app data when memory runs low — the subscription disappears from the TV and has to be added again.
The subscription doesn't refresh
- Timeout on refresh. Happ requests the subscription from the service's server and waits 9 seconds for a reply. No reply — a Timeout error. The subscription server is unreachable from your network: switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or the other way round and refresh again.
- Date and time on the device. A secure connection to the subscription server fails if the device clock is wrong. Turn on automatic date and time.
- A connected VPN. If the subscription refreshes through a tunnel that is already up and the server is down, the refresh fails too. Disconnect, refresh the subscription and connect again.
If the subscription won't refresh on any network, write to the service's support: the problem is on its side.
Servers are listed, but it won't connect
- Check latency. Tap the speedometer icon in the subscription header. Next to each server you will see a time in milliseconds or an icon: a green check — the server is available, a red exclamation mark — unavailable.
- Pick another server or another country. If one country works and another doesn't, the provider has blocked the IP of that specific server. Report it to the service's support.
- All servers are red. The whole network is failing: check the internet without VPN and switch networks. Network causes — protocol blocking, whitelists on mobile internet — are covered in VPN not working.
- iPhone and iPad. On the first connection, iOS asks you to allow a VPN configuration. If you declined, delete the Happ configuration in Settings → General → VPN & Device Management → VPN and connect again. Another VPN profile active at the same time also stops Happ from connecting.
- Update Happ. Services update their servers to the current Xray core, and old versions of Happ stop connecting to them. Windows requires Windows 10 build 1809 or later; a Mac with the .dmg install requires macOS 13 or later.
Timeout when checking: what it means
Happ has two different Timeouts — it matters which one you see.
| Where it appeared | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| When adding or refreshing a subscription | The subscription server did not reply within 9 seconds | Switch networks and retry. Fails everywhere — the service's support |
| When checking a server or with “Check current connection” | The server did not respond to the check through the tunnel | Pick another server. None respond — look at the network |
Happ has three types of check. ICMP is a regular ping to the server; the tunnel is turned off for it. TCP is the time to set up a connection to the server; if the server sits behind a CDN, the result shows the latency to the nearest CDN point, not to the server itself. Via Proxy is a request to a test site through the tunnel: it covers the whole path and comes closest to what you will see in use. A server that answers over TCP but times out via proxy accepts connections, but traffic does not pass through it.
“Connected”, but the internet doesn't work
The tunnel is up, but traffic does not go through it.
- Tap “Check current connection”. A value in milliseconds — the tunnel works, and the cause is a specific site or app. “Timeout” — traffic does not pass.
- On “Timeout”, pick another server in the same country, then another country. It works on another country — the provider is restricting that specific server.
- Check the date and time on the device.
- Turn Happ off and check the internet without VPN. It doesn't work without VPN either — the network is the problem.
- Restart Happ. On iPhone, restart the device as well.

One site or app doesn't work
If the rest of the internet works and one site doesn't, the cause is that site or the routing.
- The site restricts IPs of foreign servers. Some Russian sites and apps do not open from a foreign IP. Services with routing send their traffic outside the VPN tunnel, and the site sees a Russian IP.
- The site blocks VPN server IPs. Some sites block access from data-centre networks. Try a server in another country.
- The service's routing rules. The service sets in the subscription which traffic goes through the tunnel and which goes outside it. If a site falls under the wrong rule, write to the service's support and include the site's address.
Slow or dropping
- Latency is not speed. The milliseconds in Happ show the server's response time, not throughput. A server with low latency can be slow, and the other way round.
- Closer means a faster response. A server in a neighbouring country responds faster than one across an ocean.
- Wi-Fi and the mobile network. A weak signal and a congested network cut speed with and without VPN.
- Drops on iPhone. iOS limits the memory of a network tunnel to about 50 MB. When the tunnel exceeds the limit, the system terminates it — the connection drops. Reconnect; if the drops are regular, report your device model and iOS version to the service's support.
What else affects speed — in What VPN speed depends on.
Errors in Happ logs
The Happ screen shows only Timeout. The Xray core writes the detailed cause of a failure to the log: Settings (gear icon, top left) → Logs. Open it right after a failed connection and find the line with the error.
| Text in the log | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
connection refused | The server refused the connection: nothing accepts connections at this address and port | Pick another server. Refused on every server — write to the service's support |
EOF, unexpected EOF | The connection closed in the middle of the data exchange: the server or equipment along the way cut it | Refresh the subscription: the server closes the connection if it does not accept your identifier. Didn't help — switch server or network |
TLS handshake with timeout, failure or reset | A secure connection to the server was not established | Check the device's date and time, refresh the subscription, switch networks |
network is unreachable | The device has no route to the server: the internet is down, or the server's address is on IPv6, which you don't have | Check the internet without VPN, switch networks |
i/o timeout, context deadline exceeded | The server did not respond in the allotted time | Pick another server, then another country |
connection reset by peer | The connection was reset on the way to the server | Switch networks. Reset on every server — see VPN not working |
Include the error line in your support request. Cut the subscription link out of the log: anyone who gets it can connect with it.
What to tell the service's support
Include in your request:
- a screenshot of the Happ screen with the error or the server list;
- the device, system version and Happ version;
- the network: Wi-Fi or mobile data, the provider or operator, the city;
- the chosen country and server;
- the time the connection dropped;
- the error line from the log, if there is one.
With this, support finds the cause without follow-up questions. Bugs in the Happ app itself — crashes, buttons that don't work — go to the Happ developer, not the service.
If you use MaskNet
- The server in each location is checked every 20 seconds. If it stops responding, traffic moves to a backup server in the same location without your involvement.
- The subscription refreshes on its own. Tap ↻ if there are no servers in the list.
- The line “Достигнут максимальный лимит устройств” (maximum device limit reached) in the server list means all the places in your plan are taken. Remove an old device in your account and refresh the subscription on the new one.
- To a TV, the subscription is sent from a phone: open Happ on the TV — it shows a QR code. Scan it in Happ on the phone where the MaskNet subscription is already added.
- Support — tickets in your account.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there no servers in Happ?
The subscription did not refresh, the term ended or the device limit is exceeded. Refresh the subscription with ↻ and read the lines in the list: the service writes the reason in them.
What does Timeout mean in Happ?
If the error appeared when refreshing the subscription, the subscription server did not reply within 9 seconds. If it appeared when checking a server, the server did not respond through the tunnel. In the first case, switch networks; in the second, switch servers.
Why is Happ connected but there is no internet?
The tunnel is up, but traffic does not pass through the server. Tap “Check current connection”: on “Timeout”, pick another server or country and check the device's date and time.
Why did Happ stop connecting after the subscription refreshed?
The service replaced its servers, and an old version of Happ does not support their parameters. Update Happ to the latest version from an official source.
Will an INCY subscription work if Happ doesn't?
Yes, if its servers use VLESS, VMess, Trojan, Shadowsocks or Hysteria2: INCY reads the same subscription link. What to check in INCY — in INCY is not connecting.
Why does Happ work on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data?
The mobile operator restricts traffic: it blocks the protocol or switches on whitelist mode. Details in VPN not working.
